About this deal

His style is often classified as magical realism, while a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions and migrations between the Eastern and Western world.

De Wet’s iconographic scheme was based on well-known chronicles of Scottish history by the Renaissance humanists Hector Boece (Scotorum Historiae, 1527) and George Buchanan (Rerum Scoticarum Historia, 1582). Beyond its idiosyncratic antics, Grimus thus evinces the author’s deep-seated abhorrence of the “absolutism of the pure” ( Imaginary Homelands 394). In Grimus, the metaphor of love is literalised in Flapping Eagle’s physical “unions” with Irina and Elfrida.

The unclipped dustjacket has minimal shelfwear, and minor sunning to the spine; protected in archival mylar. Out of all of Rushdie's novels that I've read, Rushdie's worst books ( Grimus, Fury) are the ones that did not overtly reference the subcontinent.

Anoxan Indian, or Flapping Eagle, is a young man who drinks a magical liquid and receives the gift of immortality. Definitely not a book for a Rushdie beginner but if you want to see the seeds which later developed in his later novels then Grimus is worth a read but prepare to be underwhelmed. Flapping Eagle is an outcast Indian weary of the immortality bestowed on him 700 years ago by an elixir. However, I did find some passages to be well written and some great ideas, so I will continue to try and read more of Rushdie. The deep, anguished sense of doubt that pervades Grimus makes Salman Rushdie closer to a skeptic li (. This technical term materialises and turns into ridicule the Sufi process of unification, as the need for a tool suggests a highly artificial process.

Do you deny that allowing you to wander the world for centuries instead of bringing you here I made you the man that you are, chameleon, adaptable, confused? The original reads as follows: “Tous les hommes sont mortels: mais pour chaque homme sa mort est un accident et, même s’il la connaît et y consent, une violence indue” ( Une mort très douce 151). After 777 years he wants mortality and to find his sister, eventually ending up on the metaphysical Calf Island. Flapping Eagle schlägt sich mit Geistern herum, wechselt in andere Dimensionen und durchschreitet Tore der Erkenntnis, immer dem Rätsel auf der Spur .Here the use of alliterations and violent verbs lays the emphasis on the destruction of the wayfarer by the personified mountain.
