About this deal

The D3500's live view autofocus is much faster and more responsive than we'd expect from a simple contrast-based AF system.

I shoot wide and long focal lengths mostly, so I got myself primes in the wide end and in the long end. Eventually, I bought a couple in the 'normal' range, but that took some years. Measured at 23°C/73.4°F (±2 °C/3.6 °F) with the camera at default settings and an AF-P DX NIKKOR 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6G VR lens under conditions specified by the Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA). Individual movies can be up to 20 minutes in length or 4 GB in size; recording may end before these limits are reached if the camera temperature rises. You might also still find an older version still available, the EN-EL14 (without the “a” at the end). Go with the newer version if possible. You seem to be short-minded, as the CIPA 1550 Shots Battery rating isn't meant for one day of course - i do charge my DSLR Batteries, and can use them for months, even after 4-6 months or more, they do have enough energy left for my shooting style. With a inferior NP-FW50, i can charge it all few days, weeks, because the battery itself is being emptied inside the camera. Additionally, the Nikon D3500 is capable of continuous shooting up to five frames-per-second (fps), helping to capture candid moments with ease. The Nikon D3500 is also equipped with Full HD 1080/60p video capability. Users can switch from shooting photos to video at the press of a button, allowing them to capture spur-of-the-moment memories that will last a lifetime with stunning sharpness and clarity. What about image quality? The D3500's 24.2MP sensor produces impressive results, although you'll want to invest in some additional lenses to really see its potential.

Compared to many DSLRs the screen – a 3in, 921k-pixel affair that neither tilts nor pivots – is frill-free. It’s not touch-sensitive either, but is bright, clear and makes easy work of getting your settings figured out. Our only major bugbear is that there’s no sensor to tell the screen to shut off when you lift the camera up – the screen turns off when you half press the shutter button but is otherwise on all the time unless you turn it off manually. If you haven’t come to expect this from using other cameras you might not even notice, but for seasoned shooters it’s a definite hallmark of the D3500’s budget position. Sept 12: Fujifilm has announced a new medium format mirrorless camera: Fujifilm GFX 100 II. There are three new lenses alongside it, a GF 55mm f/1.7R WR and two new tilt-shift lenses. If you've made up your mind to get a DSLR, the Nikon D3500 does face some strong competition in the Canon range. The cheapest of all is the Canon EOS Rebel T100 / EOS 4000D, but it's hard to find now. It was made down to a price and it showed – we didn't like it much at all. The EOS Rebel T7/2000D is closer to the Nikon D3500 in specifications, and an ideal alternative if you're a Canon fan. However, the battery life is worse, its burst mode is slower, and there's no retracting lens option – in fact getting a good kit lens with IS (image stabilization) pushes the price higher still. The Fujifilm X-T100 easily wins for dynamic range in our lab tests, with the Canon EOS Rebel T7/2000D in second place and the Nikon D3500 and Sony A68 very slightly behind. Verdict One final area the D3500 elevates itself above its competition is its burst mode – 5fps is very respectable. It might not be enough to cover a professional sporting event, but for portraits and events it’s pretty good. The buffer is limited: in JPEG mode we found the burst mode was good for 15 images, followed by a fairly lengthy digestion process. In RAW mode we could only shoot eight frames continuously before the camera paused to process. Nikon D3500 review: Video quality

OUTSHINE THE ORDINARY

The D3500 retains the same effective 24.2MP pixel count as the old Nikon D3400, but uses a newer sensor, and closer inspection of the specs shows that the total count on the D3500's sensor stands at 24.78MP, compared to 24.72MP on the D3400. The camera's 'Guide' mode tries to help teach you the camera's functions and how to get the most out of it.
