About this deal

Wan has written a sensitive story of discrimination faced in ‘old boy' law firms in particular but also in the world in general...intriguing and entertaining. This reviewer is looking to Wan's next novel.” — Library Journal So,” he continued without preamble, “I’m wondering about your availability this month. Do you have any time coming up?” As I followed Ingrid Yung through the novel, I realized that the story appeals to all women, regardless of age, race, country of origin, and occupation.

A word to the wise," Murph said in a lowered voice. "I hear Adler's looking to staff some monster deal. If you see him around, look busy." The romance was on point, and it had so many elements that I adore. It’s a workplace romance, so there’s a bit of a forbidden aspect, and I’ve already mentioned the One Bed, and (Insert Fangirl Scream Here) there’s a whole sequence where they’re snowed in together! There’s also a slight age gap, where she is older than he is by a few years. The perfection! There were a few times I wanted to shake Perdie out of frustration, but she eventually does it herself and starts working on her insecurities and fears. In the end, this was a romance, yes, but also the story of a woman who learns to takes risks for her happiness, her career, and love. One of my favorite characters, albeit minor, is Ingrid’s mother, a Chinese immigrant who reminded me of nothing more than a Jewish mother. I can say that. I’m sure she’s terribly anti-PC, but Ingrid-ah’s mom, who initials her on all phone messages with “Love, Mom,” is too cute not to mention.

Here was another thing about all the male attorneys I worked with. They all called me by my last name, Yung, instead of by my first name, Ingrid. I wondered if some of them even knew what my first name was. But I didn't mind this. I'd been in the corporate world long enough to know that it was a good sign. When they felt comfortable enough to swear like sailors around me, I knew I was finally in.

We did this because we felt like her emotional journey is about learning that real power comes from being true to yourself,” Lee says. “And only when she is able to let go of the things she thought she wanted the most at the beginning of the story — making partner — and only when she truly is doing the right thing for the right reasons, does she actually end up getting the prize. But that prize is no longer what is truly important to her anymore.”

About this book

Behind Helen Wan's wit and sparkling prose is a poignant and at times, painfully honest tale of loyalty, ambition and sacrifice. Funny, fragile, sometimes bold, often unsure, Ingrid Yung is one of those unforgettable heroines that you actually miss, like a dear friend, when the story’s over." –Ann Leary, New York Times bestselling author of "The Good House"

And while you’ll feel frustrated, stressed out and completely chaotic with Perdie, you’ll also feel her struggle in a world built for men that would be so much better if work atmospheres were a bit less misogynistic!!!!! There are some nice moments between characters, some good bits of banter, and if you’re in it for the smut, it’s got good smut. A wholly engrossing behind-the-scenes look at real life behind the pomp, power and prestige of a high-powered law firm that wants to still play by a 1950s rule book.”— Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus, co-authors of Citizen Girl and The Nanny Diaries Wan succeeds in exploring and fictionalizing the timely topics of sexism and racism in workplace politics in a fluent, thought-provoking, and compelling tale.” — Booklist What I like about Ingrid is she's every person who's fighting for position in the workforce. She's very likeable and very relatable, even if you're not up for a partnership in a law firm. :) Plus, she doesn't want to be appointed based on giving the firm an appearance of diversity - she wants it based on merit, which she's earned. She doesn't ever want that questioned either.Realizing this is a bit sad as we hope that things have changed for women in big business and in the world at large. They have certainly improved, but we are still far from perfect gender equality in the workforce and we are breaking down the stereotypical expectations that people have of women.
